A week from this coming Sunday will be August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration. The day before, on Saturday afternoon, St Paul's folks will join volunteers from other congregations and civic and fraternal organizations to share school supplies for all grades with children and families in need of them. This will be the second annual Unity in the Community School Supplies Giveaway at Nelson English City Park.
Once again the generosity of the congregation of St Paul's is on display in preparation for this occasion. Thank you! In response to my mention of this event in my July 13 blog and an announcement in the bulletin the last two Sundays, a number of you have ordered some of the needed supplies and already had them sent to the church address.
Ms Georgette Robertson, a lay leader at Cornish Memorial AME Zion Church, is the point person for organizing the school supplies. She has now assigned St Paul's and Cornish to focus upon the supplies needs of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders. In particular, these high school students need the following:
college-ruled paper
college-ruled composition books (both spiral bound and non-spiral bound)
1-inch and 2-inch 3-ring binders with pockets
pocket dividers for 3-ring binders
ballpoint pens
No 2 pencils
calculators

If you prefer to shop in person and bring supplies with you to church on Sunday, July 30 or on weekdays before August 5, that's great, too. We will add those things to the collection of donations Tricia is organizing in the copy room of Holy Innocents' Hall.
There will again be free food at the event, including hot dogs, hamburgers, and various kinds of chips and snacks. If you would like to donate a multi-pack of Frito Lay or other snacks or a case of bottled water, that would also be most welcome. I am hoping for another snow cone this year as last.
Last year five St Paul's folks represented the congregation at Nelson English Park. It promises to be another hot afternoon as the event runs 12-4 PM. Would you consider joining us in person for one or more hours to help share these school supplies with neighbors who need them? We will have our purple tent set up, tables and chairs where you can sit in the shade, the St Paul's banner so you can find us, and cold water waiting in a cooler. As we follow Jesus into the community beyond our campus to render practical acts of loving service, we expand the embrace of St Paul's. We know the Holy Spirit will also be present to bless and multiply our efforts. Come be part of the blessing of community and shared humanity.
