Saint Paul's Arms

03Aug

After many months of searching for an appropriate designer followed by quite a few more months of design development, we have a new logo for the parish. In heraldic terms, these are the assumed arms of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Key West.

I was very happy to find church heraldry expert designer Matthew Alderman and to work with him on this project. The deep blue, red, and gold of the design echo some of the dominant colors in our stained-glass windows. The anchor represents our hope in Christ, the anchor of our faith, and reflects our nautical heritage. The sword is the sword of the Spirit associated with Saint Paul, and the Latin phrase inscribed on the pages of the open book is Spiritus Gladius, meaning "sword of the Spirit." The blue and white waves are drawn from our diocesan seal and also reflect our beautiful ministry context on these southernmost keys.

The vestry has voted to accept and approve this coat of arms. We plan to utilize them often on signage, posters, stationery, capital campaign materials, parking decals, and so on. Already you can see our new arms on the website and at the back of the nave on posters with the bulletin QR code. We look forward in future to lots of Saint Paul's swag featuring this logo (think: polo shirts, T shirts, SPF shirts, baseball caps, shopping bags, and any number of other items). Stay tuned!

Thank you again so very much to everyone who has so generously donated school supplies for the Unity in the Community event. We look forward to another successful venture in collaboration with other congregations and fraternal and civic organizations. If you would like to join the festivities and possibly staff the Saint Paul's tables, join us at Nelson English City Park on Saturday, August 5 from 12-4PM.
