Restoration Update

05Nov

If you are looking for news of where we are in our restoration process, here are some places to get it:

1) the Restoration page on the parish website (https://stpaulskeywest.org/restoration/),

2) the town hall following the 9:30 AM Eucharist in the parish hall on Sunday (the service livestream will continue after the dismissal, so you can stay online to hear the in-person updates),

3) this blog post. Please read on.

Phase 1 of the restoration of our stained-glass windows is underway but crawling: Willet Studios is in the midst of a lengthy permitting process with the City of Key West. The good news is that the process is underway. We hold out hope that the windows removal work may yet begin before the end of 2025.

The concrete restoration and repair work is getting closer to beginning: the building committee has made a recommendation on a concrete contractor, and your vestry still must vote on it. The good news is that we had a very difficult decision between two excellent options for the concrete work. When the contractor decision is finalized by the vestry, there will be a period of final contract preparation to ensure that everything that our architect, David Salay of Bender and Associates, included in the construction plans is in fact included in the contract.

To facilitate the windows work and the interior concrete restoration work, the current pews of St Paul's had to be removed from their floor anchors. Ideally, both the windows experts and the concrete experts would like the space of the nave to be completely clear of all furnishings. We have the opportunity to share pews with a congregation that really needs them, as St Paul's has done previously in giving extra pews to St Peter's, Key West. Donating our current pews is among the options being considered, along with storing the pews offsite, while the restoration work in the nave moves forward.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on Sunday.
