The Reverend Andy Barnett, Episcopal priest and professional musician, holds that music to which we are exposed--or, perhaps better, in which we are immersed--around the ages of eight to ten years often lives in us deeply as the music of our hearts. We can love and appreciate all types and genres of music, but the music of those childhood years tends to transport us in time and to move us strongly.
When old gospel hymns such as "Blessed Assurance" are played and sung, I feel in my entire body the truth of Andy's teaching. The hymns of my childhood are powerful for me.
I'm very grateful that my formation as a young person involved musical education and a wide variety of musical genres. And I'm delighted that this weekend we can share in the beauty and resonance of classic gospel hymns with our special musical guest, Mark Miller, as we celebrate Restoration Gospel Weekend at St Paul's. Join us for Gospel Evensong at 6 PM Friday, a Gospel concert at 6 PM Saturday, and a Gospel Eucharist at 10 AM Sunday. Y'all come.
