All of the windows of St. Paul's have a rich backstory, connecting the bible stories they depict to the artists who created them and to the community members who are commemorated. Stained glass artist and expert Cathy Jordan has referred to St. Paul's as "a museum of stained glass in the United States," citing the important studios whose work can be seen in our windows.
Below is a short tour which will introduce you to the windows of St. Paul's:
- Start by turning back to the Duval Street entrance of the church, and look up. Here you will see Window #102: Jesse Tree (The Porter Memorial) by Phipps, Ball, and Burnham, and the genealogy windows on either side by Charles Connick Associates.
- Turn around and walk down the center aisle of the church. The third big upper window on the right side is Window #109: Wedding Feast at Cana by Payne Spiers Studio.
- Continue along the right side walking toward the altar. At eye level beside the small Mary altar, you will come upon Window #18: The Annunciation of Our Lady, dedicated to the Daughters of the King and created by Phipps, Ball, & Burnham.
- As you approach the high altar, take in the stunning centerpiece of St. Paul's, Window #117: The Crucifixion.
- On either side of the high altar, notice the more modern style of the dedications there by Powell Brothers & Sons, including Window #119: Zacchaeus Climbing the Sycamore Tree.
- As you leave the altar, notice the two windows in a bright, modern style that face the altar at the top of the transept, created by local artist Harry Taylor, who was 84 years old when these windows were commissioned. On the right is Window #124: Christ with Fishermen, a beautiful and fitting tribute in Key West.
