Moses Smiting the Rock (Detail)
Studio Unknown. After 1920; before 1950
In Sacred Memory of Rosana M. Myers Born March 7, 1884 Died December 27, 1920
DESCRIPTION: This serene girl is wearing a loosely fitted blue garment with a white veil tossed lightly over her head. She is gathering water in a shallow brass bowl to fill a large pottery jug.
THE STORY: If one assumes that this young woman was a daughter, she was expected to help her mother. At a very early age she began to learn the various domestic skills she would need to become a good wife and mother. By the age of 12 a young girl had become a homemaker in her own right and was allowed to marry.
Every family needed water which was no easy task to obtain. Women going to the common well for their families would need considerable strength to carry the heavy jug back to the dwelling place. However, the trip for water gave them a chance to talk to others, exchange news and gossip.
