Window #117c - Crucifixion (Left Panel)

22May

Crucifixion (Left Panel Detail)
Phipps, Ball & Burnham - 1920
Leonora J. Seymour, Hiram A. Seymour
Charles E. Seymour, John C. Seymour
DESCRIPTION: Completing the narrative, the left panel of the Crucifixion depicts some of those who observed the death of Christ. In this detail of the left panel there are three people: a bearded man and two women. Their garments are elaborate and fall in soft folds.
THE STORY: A great number of people witnessed the crucifixion. Among them were Jesus' mother, Mary, and Mary Magdalene, represented by the two women in this detail.
MEMORIAL: Hiram Seymour was born in the Bahamas in 1849. His father was born in England; his mother in Bermuda. He came to the United States in 1868, settling in Key West as the owner of a grocery store and sea captain.
Leonora Jane Dunn was born in Florida in 1855. Her father was from Ireland; her mother from Florida. Hiram and Leonora were married on March 7, 1872, with The Reverend William T. Saunders, rector of St. Paul's officiating.
Hiram and Leonora were the parents of a number of children: Hiram, Charles, John, Mary Nellie, and Jennie. Baby Hiram died the day he was born, having lived long enough to be baptized. Charles was born on March 1, 1876, became a steam engineer and was married to Emma Risch on November 18, 1909, in a service conducted by The Reverend Charles Stout, rector of St. Paul's. The Transfiguration (Window #127) is in memory of Jennie and Nellie. Little is known of John other than his birth on February 1, 1883 and his death at the age of 30 on July 3, 1917.
Since the window was installed in 1920, ti is presumed that Captain Hiram Seymour, who died in 1922 at the age of 73, was the donor of this portion of the Crucifixion.
