To the Glory of God and in Memory of Eric Curry 1894 - 1956
Given by his Mother
DESCRIPTION: Viewed as a single splendid unit, Jesse Tree (Window #102), installed in 1920 by Phipps, Ball & Burnham, and the flanking Prophet windows (#101 and #103) installed in 1959 by Connick Associates, depict the Messianic prophesies of the Old Testament. Connick Associates brought together such continuity with the earlier Phipps, Ball & Burnham window that, at first glance, one does not realize that they were made at different times by different studios.
In this right panel Prophet window, two of the four major prophets of Israel, Isaiah and Jeremiah are depicted. The other two prophets, Daniel and Ezekiel, are featured in Genealogy Window - Prophets Daniel and Ezekiel, on the left side of Jesse Tree.
The top figure, Isaiah, stands barefoot, holding a rose in one hand and a scroll in the other. His layered garments are colorful: the outer one lavender with a cloak of vivid green and blue. The bottom figure, Jeremiah, also stands barefoot and holds a scroll in his right hand. His left hand is bound by a three link chain. His layered garments are elaborate and of vivid colors. A grape vine, heavy with luscious purple grapes, surrounds and ornaments the prophets.
THE STORY: The rose, a symbol of Mary, held by Isaiah symbolizes his prophecy: "Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14) The three link chain bind-ing Jeremiah's left hand represents the frequent imprisonments he endured as a result of his predictions of the destruction of Jerusalem in his quest to tell of the coming of the Messiah: "Behold, the days to come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days, Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord our Righteousness." (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)
